How to Accessorise Your Car

How to Prepare for Your First Caravanning Holiday

With recent events placing so much emphasis on the family unit and the need to socially distance from others, you may be thinking about how you can apply the philosophy to your next holiday. As hotels may remain closed for some time, perhaps you should think about buying a caravan so that you can control your environment when you are on the road. However, you need to make sure that the towing vehicle is up to the task as well, so what do you need to think about?

Preparation

Firstly, decide what type of caravan you are going to get, and make sure that it is of the right size and configuration for your household. The manufacturer or supplier will be able to tell you the critical numbers so that you know its dimensions and, crucially, the maximum weight.

Calculation

You will then be able to add this weight to the laden weight of your towing vehicle and must ensure that the combined amount is below the maximum permissible. In so doing, you'll ensure that your rig is always road legal, as and when you are allowed to set off on your adventure.

Fitment

You must also buy and fit an approved towbar, together with hitch, tow ball and all the accessories. You will then need to install these and make sure that the vehicle can safely tow your new caravan, even when you have fully loaded the tow vehicle with family and gear.

DIY Not Recommended

Some people may choose to fit their towbar by themselves, but this can be a very tricky job. It will invariably require specialised tools that most people will not have, and it is vital to ensure that you do not make any mistakes. Remember, a lot is riding on this, and if you do not correctly fix the towbar, then the vehicle may not handle correctly when on the road. In the worst-case scenario, the towing equipment could break, with all the repercussions that would bring.

Coming to You

Nevertheless, you may be thinking twice about driving to a nearby garage to get the towbar fitted to your vehicle. You may prefer to remain distant and in this case, why not get the towbar installation company to come to you? You'll be pleased to know that there are organisations locally that can do this. They will fit the towbar to your vehicle outside your home or place of work in as little time as possible.
